Hospital Sant Pau

It’s full name, Hospital de Sant Pau i Santa Creu, refers both the entity and person that funded its construction. Pau Gil, a remarkable banker and entrepreneur, who was established in Paris, left half of his heritage to make it happen, as he passed away with no descendants, and the Hospital de la Santa Creu, which origins go back to the 15th century, that needed a new placement outside the urban center where it was at the time.

This is an invaluable Neo Gothic inspired Modernism style masterpiece by its quality and revolutionary technique of construction. It was started in 1902 and the project was halted unfinished in 1930. It was designed by the remarkable Lluís Domenech i Montaner, who was well above ahead of his time in art and architecture, and conceived a structure with purpose and distribution without precedents. Lluís Domènech i Montaner

Teacher of Masters, he is one of the most remarkable architects of his time, his legacy is a masterpiece. Hospital St. Pau and Palau de la Música Catalana are just two examples of his technical and artistic capabilities, two buildings that are part of the UNESCO Human Heritage patrimony. Born in Barcelona and established in Paris since he was young, he was a banker and prestigious businessman within Paris bourgeoisie. He decided to leave half of his fortune in will for the construction of a hospital in Barcelona.
